The Zambezi's second largest hydro-electric dam was constructed during the 1970s at the Cahora Bassa rapids, once famous for preventing early navigation from the Zambezi Delta to the river's upper reaches. Due to civil unrest in Mozambique until the 1990s, the land surrounding Lake Cabora Bassa remained relatively undeveloped.
