The
Batoka Gorge, downstream from Victoria Falls, famous for white-water rafting,
is a fine Zambezi wilderness, and the home of rare bird species such as the
Taita Falcon. The Gorge is threatened with flooding by a proposed hydro-electric
scheme. But opposition from conservation groups, including The Zambezi Society,
to energy generation schemes which are costly in economic and environmental
terms may mean that the Batoka Gorge wilderness could be saved for the Taita
Falcon and for the enjoyment of future generations of human adventurers.
